This post is something very close to my heart. Christmas is just around the corner and it’s a super exciting time for everyone! From amazing food, to being with family & friends and of course, the giving of presents. It’s definitely my favourite time of year. But what about the people who don’t get to celebrate Christmas? Those who don’t have family and don’t get to open presents on Christmas Day?
That’s where the ShoeBox Appeal comes in. This has played a huge part of my life (more so recently) for as long as I can remember. For those of you who don’t have a clue what I’m talking about, Operation Christmas Child A.K.A The Shoebox Appeal, is a charity run by The Samaritan’s Purse, who provide children from around the world who may have nothing, with a Christmas Present.
Now this charity is particularly special to my heart purely because my mum does so much work for it. Every year, my mum runs a one day event, where she gathers our local church and fills as many shoeboxes as possible to ship over to less fortunate children for Children. Last year, she broke her record of filling nearly 300 boxes. She spends the year planning this event, storing countless amounts of shoeboxes in our loft and collecting various gifts, out of her own money, just to make sure that these children get a Christmas present. It’s safe to say that she blows my mind when it comes to her kindness and generosity. I cannot wait for her to beat her record at this year’s event. Due to health reasons, she is unable to fly out and see the children’s faces when receiving their gifts.
I ask her, ‘Does this not bother you that you won’t see them opening their presents?’ She says ‘No, I just use my imagination’. That says it all!
So when you’re buying your presents for your loved ones this year, take a few minutes and think about the children who may not get a Christmas this year? All you have to do is wrap an empty shoe box, fill it with anything that you think a child would love, whether it be a teddy bear, some sweets, a hat and scarf…anything that you think will bring a smile to a child’s face. Add £3 for shipping. Put the ShoeBox label on it and take it to a drop off point! Or you can donate to the Samaritan Purse’s Website! Operation Christmas Child Website
